Viking matmen 3-2 at Weston Close Wrestling Classic

The Huntington North High School varsity wrestling team went 3-2 and finished third out of the six teams competing in the Weston Close Memorial Wrestling Classic at Huntington North on Thursday, Dec. 27.

The Vikings' wins came against Angola in the second round, 38-29, Southern Wells in the third round, 51-21, and Logansport in the fifth round, 48-27.

The team recorded 14 pins on the day.

Huntington North fell to eventual tournament champion Snider in the first round, 45-24, and eventual tournament runner-up Fairfield in the fourth round, 38-29.

Sebastian Eckert at 152, Kyle Jolas at 145 and Shawn Renz at 285 each finished 5-0 for the Vikings.

All five of Eckert's wins came via pin; Jolas won on two pins, a technical fall, a major decision and a forfeit; and Renz won on a major decision and four forfeits.

Huntington North had three 4-1 finishers in Alex Beal at 126, Ian Hiers at 138 and Layne Emery at 195.

Beal recorded a pin, a technical fall, and two decisions; Hiers notched a pin and three decisions; and Emery got a pin, a major decision, a decision and a forfeit.

Three Vikings - Tanner Shipley at 132, Dakota Plasterer at 170 and Josh Danals at 220 - finished 3-2.

Shipley and Plasterer each earned two pins and a decision while Danals got his wins on three forfeits.

Chandler Updike, at 160, went 2-3 and both of his wins came via forfeit.
