Lady Vikes let game slip away in loss to Jay County

The Huntington North High School girls' varsity basketball team lost a 10-point lead in the final quarter and fell to host Jay County, 28-27, on Tuesday, Jan. 8.
The Lady Vikings, 3-11, were up 25-15 in the final frame but saw the hosts score 13 of the game's final 15 points. The winning score was the only time Jay County led in the contest.
With a slow pace and neither team showing much marksmanship from the field, the Lady Vikes led 4-2 after the first quarter, 10-4 after two quarters and 14-9 after three quarters.
Freshman Hannah Stoffel led HNHS with eight points and six rebounds. Maddie Klender scored five points.
The Lady Vikes hit only 10 of 34 field goal attempts for 29.4 percent and were 7 of 12 from the charity stripe for 58.3 percent. Jay County hit only 9 of 25 shots for 36 percent and was 10 of 17 from the free-throw line for 58.8 percent. Neither team hit a 3-pointer in the contest.
Katlin Petro led Jay County with a game-high 10 points.
The Lady Vike junior varsity squad drubbed its Jay County foe, 40-3. Corinne Tester and Madi Canady each had eight points to lead the way.
