Lady Vikings use team approach to place third at Valpo invite

The Huntington North High School varsity gymnastics team used the team approach to finish third out of nine teams in the Viking Invitational at Valparaiso on Saturday, Jan. 12.

Despite only having four top 10 finishers in the day's events, the Lady Vikings were steady across the board, racking up a point total of 95.450.

Individually, Carly Snyder took 10th in the all around with a score of 31.350.

A pair of Lady Vikes turned in solid performances on the balance beam, with Mikayla Carpenter finishing eighth with an 8.725 and Mavin Chaney placing ninth with an 8.650.

Robyn Karst tied for ninth on vault with an 8.750 to round out the team's individual accolades.

Valparaiso won the invitational with a score of 110.550, taking first place in three events and second in the other two. Hagerstown was runner-up with a 98.975.

Carpenter had the second-best all-around effort for HNHS with a score of 31.225, and Chaney scored a 23.800.

Snyder scored an 8.500 to finish second for HNHS in the vault, and Carpenter was third with an 8.450 as HNHS scored 25.7 points for its top showing of the meet.

Snyder led the Lady Vikings on the uneven bars with a score of 7.050. Chaney was second with a 6.750 and Carpenter was third with a 6.200 as the Lady vikings score 20.000 points.

On balance beam, Carpener led with a score of 8.725, followed by Chaney with an 8.650 and Snyder with an 8.075. The team scored 25.450.

Karst led HNHS on the floor exercise with a score of 8.275, followed by Alexa Shoemaker with an 8.175 and Carpenter with a 7.850 as the team score was a 24.300.
