Local Special Olympics to host 6th annual hoop tourney on Saturday

Huntington County Schools Special Olympics will host the sixth annual Huntington County Invitational Basketball Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 2.

First games begin at 8 a.m., with a pause for opening ceremonies at 9 a.m. The opening ceremonies and most games will take place at Riverview Middle School, with several games played at the neighboring Horace Mann Education Center.

Tournament organizers expect 34 teams from 12 Indiana counties to participate. More than 300 Special Olympic athletes will participate in five-on-five games, three-on-three half-court games and basketball skills events.

Three Huntington County teams will play in the tournament, with all three games played at Riverview.

The Huntington County five-on-five Vikings will play the Pulaski County All Stars at 10:30 a.m.

The Huntington County three-on-three Raiders match up against the Pulaski County Hoopsters at 11:30 a.m.

The Huntington County Thunders Masters five-on-five team goes against the Grant County Lightning at 3:30 p.m.

Other area teams participating in the tournament include the Allen County Jaguars and Leopards, ARC/Easter Seals Raiders, three teams from Wabash County, five teams from Grant County, and teams from Cass, Elkhart, Fulton, Howard, Jay, Steuben and Wayne counties.
