McCann, Schenkel have pair of chances at state swim meet

Samantha McCann and Katie Schenkel each finished in the top eight in two events for the Huntington North High School girls' varsity swimming team in the Warsaw Swimming and Diving Sectional on Thursday, Jan. 31, to earn shots at advancing to state during competition on Saturday, Feb. 2.

McCann took fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke and eighth in the 200-yard freestyle, while Schenkel placed sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke and eighth in the 500-yard freestyle.

The top 16 swimmers returned to compete on the second day of sectionals, with the top eight competing for a chance to move on to state by either winning their respective event or meeting the state standard time.

McCann swam the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:18.03, right ahead of Schenkel's 1:18.32.

McCann's placement in the 200-yard freestyle came in 2:13.22 and Schenkel clocked in at 6:06.6 in the 500-yard freestyle.

Also finishing in the top eight for the Lady Vikings was Cassy Lange, who swam to a seventh-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:10.56, the 200-yard medley relay team, consisting of Maggie Warpup, Lange, McCann and Schenkel, which placed fourth in 2:08.72, and the 400-yard freestyle relay team comprised of Warpup, Lange, McCann and Schenkel that finished fifth in 4:13.58

Earning spots in the consolation finals, to determine ninth through 16th place points, were Warpup, 13th in the 200-yard individual medley and 12th in the 500-yard freestyle; Lange, ninth in the 100-yard freestyle; and the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Alayna Kiefer, Kaitlin Biehl, Onna Doering and Addison Clark, 11th in 2:11.31.
