Despite a strong showing by Cassy Lange in the 100-yard backstroke and solid performances by its 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relay teams, the Huntington North High School girls' varsity swimming team saw its season come to an end on Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Warsaw Swimming and Diving Sectional.
Although the Lady Vikings tallied 138 points and finished seventh out of 13 teams at the sectional, they couldn't manage first-place finishes in any of their events or meet the state standard times, which advance one to competition at state.
Of the eight swimmers vying for state in the 100-yard backstroke, Lange, a junior, placed fifth, finishing in 1:08.93
The team of Lange, Samantha McCann, Maggie Warpup and Katie Schenkel swam to a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, clocking in at 2:07.48, before grabbing fifth in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 4:09.56.
McCann and Schenkel finished back-to-back in the 100-yard breaststroke, placing sixth and seventh, respectively, as McCann squeezed by her fellow sophomore in 1:18.28 to 1:18.45.
Both sophomores swam to eighth-place finishes in their other races, with McCann completing the 200-yard freestyle in 2:14.20 and Schenkel concluding the 500-yard freestyle in 5:59.54.
Swimming in the consolation finals for Huntington North was Warpup in the 200-yard individual medley with an 11th-place finish in 2:38.63, Lange in the 100-yard freestyle with a ninth-place finish in 1:00.59 and Warpup in the 500-yard freestyle with a 13th-place finish in 6:19.28.
The Lady Vikings' 200-yard freestyle relay team of Alayna Kiefer, Kaitlin Biehl, Onna Doering and Addison Clark was disqualified.
Culver Academies won the sectional with 445 points. Warsaw placed second with 382 points and Logansport was third with 267.
The Lady Vikings will lose only three swimmers to graduation.
