Lady Vike bowlers on to semi-state

The Huntington North High School girls' varsity bowling team punched its ticket to semi-state with a fourth-place finish at the regional team bowling tournament at Pro Bowl West, in Fort Wayne, on Saturday, Feb. 2.

The top four teams after the five-game Baker position round advanced to semi-state, and the Lady Vikings found themselves just a few pins above fifth place after producing scores of 181, 136 and 128 in their first three games. However, the Lady Vikings rebounded in their final two games, putting up tallies of 212 and 228 to lock up the third seed in the stepladder finals and qualify for semi-state.

Huntington North lost to Jimtown in the finals, 309-189, to finish fourth.

In the first game of the qualifying round, Lauren Smart led the Lady Vikings with a 190, followed by Alex Rittenhouse's 166, Ashley Clark's 160, Megan Manes' 151 and MacKenzie Faurote's 142 for a team total of 809. The second game yielded a team total of 779, thanks to a 172 by Rittenhouse, Clark's 171, Faurote's 160, Smart's 143 and Kaitlyn Conley's 133. The two-game score of 1,588 put the team in third-place going into the Baker position round.

In the regional singles bowling tournament, the top 14 bowlers advanced to semi-state and Faurote took fifth place with a 530 and Rittenhouse placed 11th with a 512. Clark rolled a 435, but did not advance.

Columbia City defeated Homestead to claim the regional team title and the Spartans' Sydney Brummett beat North Side's Brooke Janes for the singles title.

Faurote and Rittenhouse's bid for state begins Saturday, Feb. 9, at 9 a.m. at Chippewa Bowl, in South Bend. The Lady Vikings will attempt to make the state finals for the fifth straight year as a team beginning at 1 p.m.
