Lady Vikings push Homestead hard before falling in sectional
Saturday, February 9, 2013 1:08 PM
A suffocating defensive effort by the Huntington North High School girls' varsity basketball team limited host Homestead to 15 percent shooting in the first half of their game in the Homestead Sectional on Friday, Feb. 8, but the Spartans found their shot in the second half and staved off the upset bid, 43-35, ending the Lady Vikings' season.
Huntington North led Homestead 7-6 after the first quarter and 18-7 halfway through the second before a Spartan run tightened things up to 20-16 at the half. The Lady Vikings hassled the Spartans into 5 for 32 shooting while making 9 of 21 shots themselves for 42.9 percent.
Homestead stormed out of the gates in the third quarter, pouring in 18 points to Huntington North's five to seize the lead, 38-21. The Lady Vikings put up 10 points to the Spartans' nine in the final frame, but the damage had been done.
Senior Allyson Trout led Huntington North, 5-16, with 11 points and eight rebounds. Fellow senior Kelsey Hollowell contributed eight points to the team's offensive effort, freshman Hannah Stoffel supplied seven points and 10 boards and junior Paige Coolman tossed in six points.
Sydney Buck tallied 23 points for Homestead, 21-3, sinking 5 of 8 from beyond the arc. Grace German led the Lady Spartans' efforts on the boards with 16.
Homestead's halftime adjustments and a fatigued Huntington North defense enabled it to shoot to the tune of 11 for 18 for 61.1 percent in the second half, while the Lady Vikings' shooting percentage dipped to 26.1 on a 6 of 23 effort.
Huntington North loses four players to graduation.
