2 Viking relay teams keep state hopes alive at swimming sectional

A pair of Huntington North High School relay teams are still in the hunt for a spot in the state swim championships next week as they reached their event finals at the Warsaw Boys' Swim-ming Sectional on Thursday, Feb. 14.
The Viking's 200-yard medley relay team and the 400-yard freestyle relay team made the sec-tional finals on Saturday, Feb. 16, by finishing in the top eight of their respective events.
Only the first place finisher in the finals and any individual or team meeting the state time stan-dard in each event advance on to the state championships, to be held Feb. 22-23 at Indiana-Purdue Indianapolis.
Both relay teams got in the sectional finals with eighth place finishes.
The medley relay team of sophomore Walter Hacker, junior Kellen Hughes, sophomore Nathan Lundy and junior Josh Lundy grabbed the final qualifying spot in 1:59.61, edging out Plymouth by less than a second.
The free relay team of Hacker, sophomore Austin Lange, Josh Lundy and Nathan Lundy got their go-ahead by placing eighth in 3:57.05, almost seven seconds better than its seed time.
Several Vikings also will swim in the consolation finals, to determine ninth through 16th place points, on Saturday, led by Hacker, who earned two ninth place finishes in the prelims. Hacker got edged out for the last finals spot by 7/100ths of a second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.16, and then got edged out in the 100-yard backstroke by a half-second with a time of 1:02.47.
Also scheduled to swim in the consolation finals were freshman Zane Cozad, who placed 15th in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:09.30; Lange and Nathan Lundy in the 200-yard individual medley, where they placed 12th and 15th, respectively, in 2:28.77 and 2:33.20; Josh Lundy in the 50-yard freestyle, where he placed 16th in :25.82; Josh Lundy in the 100-yard freestyle, where he placed 13th in :56.39; Cozad in the 500-yard freestyle, where he placed 12th in 5:48.11; the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Cozad, Hughes, Lange and senior Dakota Wibel, placing 10th in 1:50.80; and Lange in the 100-yard breaststroke, where he placed 12th in 1:13.57.
