Eckert wins opening match at state, advances to quarterfinals this morning

Huntington North High School's Sebastian Eckert won his first round match at 152 pounds by pin on Friday, Feb. 15, and will wrestle today, Saturday, Feb. 16, in the quarterfinals at the Indiana State Wrestling Finals.

Teammate Kyle Jolas, at 145 pounds, lost his first round match 4-2 to Shabaka Johns of Warren Central and ends his season with a 41-5 mark.

Eckert, a senior, pinned Kody Henshaw of Evansville Memorial at 3:19 to improve his record to 34-6 and will face top-seeded Josh Farrell, 45-0, of Greenfield Central in the quarterfinals.

Farrell, sectional, regional and semi-state champ, recorded a 22-7 technical fall win over Daniel Roach of Portage in his opening match.

Farrell is also a senior.

Henshaw, a senior, was 37-8 before facing Eckert.

Johns, a senior, went into his match against Jolas with a 36-3 record. He will face undefeated Neal Molloy, 40-0, of Danville in the quarterfinals this morning.

Jolas, a three-time state qualifier, is a junior.

Wrestling starts at 9 a.m. at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
