The Huntington North High School varsity softball team banged out four home runs and withstood a late Jay County rally for a 16-13 win over the hosts on Monday, April 8.

The game was not as close as the final score would indicate, as the Lady Vikings, 1-0, got strong pitching performances from Erin Rethlake and Mikayla Gray over the first five innings that restricted the Patriots, 1-2, to three hits and no runs.

In that timeframe, the Huntington North offense plated nearly a dozen runners and built an 11-2 advantage heading into the sixth inning.

That's when Jay County showed some life at the plate, scoring six runs and another five in the seventh off of relievers Tori Newsome and Kaylynn Rosen, but the Lady Vikings picked up five runs of their own during the final two frames and it was enough to cushion their lead for the win.

Newsome accounting for half of Lady Vikings' homers, with Rethlake and Natasha Grover getting the other bombs. Grover's five runs batted in led the team, followed by Kaylynn Rosen's three and Rethlake's two.

Rethlake and Audrey Hiner each banged out three hits, with Hiner smacking a triple among her trio.

Rethlake picked up the win on the mound, striking out eight in three innings of work. Rosen threw 1.1 innings with three strikeouts for the save, despite yielding five runs on five hits.
