Late rallies lift HU softball team to twinbill sweep over Grace

Lindsay Shellabarger blasted a three-run homer and the Huntington University softball team exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning on the way to an 11-3 opening game win and doubleheader sweep over visiting Grace College on Tuesday, April 9.

The Foresters won the second game 8-5 on a six-run rally in the sixth inning.

Shellabarger, Katie Bowers and Annie Weaver each had three RBI in the opener for HU, 9-11. Bowers also had a homer for HU.

Weaver had three hits in the contest and Shellabarger and Bowers each had two, as did Emily O'Leary and Pazia Speed. HU banged out 11 hits for the game.

The big stickwork made a winner of pitcher Marcie McDougle, who went five innings and gave up only two earned runs on nine hits, with two strikeouts and no walks.

The Foresters had a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth when Weaver opened the frame with a double. A Bowers single with one out plated her, then O'Leary singled before Shellabarger planted an 0-1 pitch over the fence for an 8-3 HU lead. Katie Knous walked and after a Cristin Carter strikeout, Knous stole second and Speed walked. A Grace error loaded the bases before Weaver cleared them with a three-run double.

Grace jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings in the second contest and held that margin until the fifth when HU scored twice. Knous, who had three hits in the contest, and Bailey McIntire linked doubles, and Weaver drove in McIntire.

The roof fell in on Grace in the sixth as O'Leary singled, Shellabarger doubled and Knous singled to start the frame. Following a Grace error, McIntire singled in another run and Catherine DePew followed with a hit of her own. Carter brought in DePew on a double, Allison Greene walked and Bowers plated both with another double.

The rally made a winner of Emily Puterbuagh, who came on in relief of McDougle and worked 4.2 innings and gave up two earned runs on five hits, with three strikeouts and two walks.

O'Leary and McIntire each had two hits for HU.
