Taylor sweeps HU softball team

The Huntington University softball team dropped back to the .500 mark with a doubleheader loss to host Taylor University on Tuesday, April 23, falling 7-2 and 2-1.

The Foresters, 14-14, tied the second game at 1-all with a run in the top of the fifth inning, only to have Taylor link doubles for what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the frame.

Marcie McDougle took the tough game two loss, allowing only one earned run on five hits, with four strikeouts in six innings.

HU got only three hits in the contest.

The Lady Trojans used two HU errors and a double steal for a run in the second inning, which the Foresters matched in the fifth on Lindsay Shellabarger's dinger down the leftfield line. In the bottom of the fifth, Taylor's Emily Tweedy led off with a double, and two outs later, came around on a two-bagger by Sarah Heath.

Huntington scored first in the opener, getting a run in the top of the first, but Taylor quickly put up a three-spot in its half of the inning. The Foresters cut the margin to 3-2 in the third, only to see Taylor score single runs in the third and fourth and two more runs in the fifth inning.

Katie Bowers and Cristin Carter each had two of the Foresters' seven hits in the contest, with Bowers and Emily O'Leary getting RBI.

Kaylin Yon and Emily Puterbaugh evenly divided the six innings on the mound for HU, with Yon taking the loss. Each HU hurler gave up five hits.

Tweedy had two hits in both games for Taylor.
