Rethlake pitches Lady Vikes to twinbill sweep over New Castle
Monday, May 6, 2013 1:27 PM
The Huntington North High School varsity softball team swept a doubleheader from host New Castle on Saturday, May 4, winning 6-1 and 1-0.
Kaylynn Rosen threw the first two innings of game one before being relieved by Lady Viking ace Erin Rethlake. New Castle had taken a 1-0 lead against Rosen, but Rethlake pitched a perfect game the rest of the way to dash the Lady Trojans' hopes of cushioning their advantage.
Huntington North, 15-1, 4-0 in the North Central Conference, grabbed the lead with a five-run fourth inning and grew it with another score in the fifth.
Audrey Hiner led the Lady Vikings' offensive effort with three hits and two runs batted in. Maddi Kennedy also banged out a trio of hits and had an RBI.
Natasha Grover scored a game-best two runs.
New Castle's lone RBI came from Harley Walls.
Rethlake struck out 15 Lady Trojan batters.
Abbey Renner got the loss for New Castle, 11-6, 2-2 in the NCC, surrendering 12 hits and six earned runs in a complete game performance.
In game two, Savanna Byers took the mound for the Lady Trojans and also pitched a complete game, scattering eight hits and an earned run.
Rethlake, however, again handled pitching duties for Huntington North and was even sharper, ceding only three pokes and no runs during a complete game performance of her own.
The junior also accounted for the game's only offense, banging out a fifth inning double that plated Kennedy, who had a game-high four hits.
Rosen and Hiner each added two hits.
Byers got tagged with the loss.
Rethlake struck out 12 without a walk and extended her streak of scoreless appearances to 10.
