Viking harriers claim fifth at own invitational

The Huntington North High School boys' varsity cross country team placed fifth out of 16 teams at the Huntington North Cross County Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 24.

Senior Charlie Mettler finished first for the Vikings and sixth overall, clocking in at 16:38.1.

Junior Matt DeWitt came next, securing 18th in 17:11.9, senior Luke Doughty took 20th in 17:14.0, junior Tyler Brown snagged 33rd in 17:42.4 and junior Christian Jones was 68th in 18:33.5.

Kyler McVoy came in 71st in 18:34.7 and senior Collin Wesco finished 88th in 19:17.4 to round out the team.

Carroll's score of 50 took the invitational title. Warsaw was runner-up with a 65 and Homestead was third with a 136. West Noble and Huntington North each tallied a 145, with West Noble finishing fourth on the strength of the sixth runner.

Ellis Coon of Warsaw won the individual title, submitting a time of 15:49.9.

Huntington North finished fourth out of 12 teams in the junior varsity race.

Junior Austin Lange placed 14th in 18:33.5 to lead the Vikings.

After Lange, junior Cam DeWitt snagged 17th in 18:46.8, freshman Dillon Valenti secured 23rd in 19:01.6, junior Logan Worsham took 27th in 19:08.4 and junior Dustin Campbell finished 32nd in 19:32.4.

Freshman Garrett Smith came in 41st in 20:07.1 and junior Matt Hunt was 56th in 20:58.5 to complete the team, which scored a 113.
