The Huntington University men's tennis team opened its season Saturday, Aug. 24, at Marian University's Doubles Tournament, where it won two of the three flights.
Vlad Khudziy and Jose Hungria teamed up to capture the Flight A Championship. After topping Marian's Marty Pochop and Ryan Heuer 8-1 in first round action, the duo knocked off J. Marval and Michael Humphrey of Grace College to advance to the championship match, where they picked off another Lancer tandem in Aaron Blevins and Daniel Sanchez. After finding themselves down 4-1 in the finals, the Huntington pair fought back to claim an 8-6 win.
It was all Huntington in Flight B with Joseph Straznicky and Diego Inurritegui storming their way through the bracket to bring home the team's second championship of the day. After receiving a first round bye, the two defeated Grace's Jack Wang and Ethan Grove 8-4 before finishing off play with an 8-1 win over Danny Albert and Ryan Hodell of Marian.
Zakk Sparks and Jacob Cross lost their opening round in Flight B to Taylor's Carter Perry and Chris Robbins, 8-5, and after receiving a bye in the consolation bracket, were knocked out of the tourney by Taylor Kinney and Nick Batuello of Marian, 8-1.
