Pair of three-set losses costs Viking netmen
Wednesday, September 4, 2013 8:56 AM
A pair of three-set losses proved the undoing of the Huntington North High School boys' tennis team in a 2-3 loss to visiting Norwell on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
Cameron Buzzard at third singles and the second doubles team of Andrew Smith and Nick May got HNHS, 2-6, to the brink of a win, but the Vikings just couldn't manage the third victory as second singles player Wyatt Nave and the first doubles team of Matt Sieberns and Graham Sereno just fell short.
Nave fell to Bryant Barger, 1-6, 6-1, 4-6, and Sieberns and Sereno were clipped by Alex Hunter and Brandon Burch in a knockdown-dragout match, 6-7, 6-4, 6-7.
Buzzard, a senior, ran over Kyler Boots, 6-1, 6-1, while Smith and May downed Noah Tobias and Cody Shively, 7-5, 6-2, for the HNHS wins.
Tommy Bolinger at first singles lost to Jordan Dickey, 3-6, 4-6.
The Huntington North junior varsity triumphed, 4-3 to run its record to 5-3 on the season.
Tyler Gates and Hunter Phillips captured singles wins, and double victories came from the team of Matt York and Brent Krieger and the duo of Dane Eherenman and Mo Phillips.
Gates beat Alex Archambault, 8-2, and Phillips took an 8-6 decision from Derek Macon. York and Krieger topped Andrew Mader and Brock Werling, 8-4, and Eherenman and Phillips clocked Ryan Bertsch and Jordan Taylor, 8-3.
