Youthful combo leads Lady Vike harriers to third straight sectional title

Led by the youthful combo of Hannah Stoffel and Cadee Harmon, the Huntington North High School girls' cross country team took its third straight Marion Sectional title on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at Indiana Wesleyan University.

Stoffel, a sophomore, placed second in a personal-best 18:54.57, and Harmon, a freshman, took fourth in her personal-best of 19:42.20 as the Lady Vikings scored 43 points to win the meet handily, with runner-up Northfield at 87 points.

Junior Emily Eherenman grabbed an all-sectional spot with ninth place in 20:02.47, junior Taryn Doering was 13th in 20:39.35 and a third junior, Stephanie McElhaney, completed the HNHS scoring by placing 15th in 20:41.52. Eherenman and Doering also had personal best times.

The Lady Vikings and the other top five finishing teams will compete Saturday at the Marion regional, also at IWU, along with the top 10 finishing individuals from non-advancing teams.

"We are very pleased with tonight," said HNHS Head Coach Carrie Boxell. "We had four PRs, two others dropped their times from NCC and another good girl that's running consistent races that we can always count on. So we are pleased, one through seven.

"We went on a four-week training cycle through the season and we're peaking right when we want to be."

Joining Huntington North and Northfield at regional from the sectional will be third place finisher Oak Hill, which scored 89 points, fourth place Southwood, which tallied 90 and fifth place Marion, which had 120.

Jenna Halderman of Northfield, a junior, was the individual champion, beating Stoffel to the finish line by 24 seconds with her time of 18:30.12.

Sophomore Marissa Jamison and senior Cassidy Johnson completed the HNHS squad by placing 16th and 21st, respectively, in 20:43.77 and 21:07.20.
