Lady Eagles notch three wins over weekend

The Huntington Lady Eagles bounced back from a two-game losing streak by winning three games this weekend in the annual Border Battle at Spiece Fieldhouse in Fort Wayne.

Last weekend the Lady Eagles lost to the Cincinnati Trailblazers and the Mishawaka Wildcats, dropping their record to 2-2 on the season. They fared better this weekend, finding the offense that alluded them the last two games, beating Horizon Christian 42-15, the Mishawaka Wildcats 52-38 and the Northwest Ohio Cougars 49-30.

In the first game of the weekend, the Lady Eagles jumped out to a first quarter margin of 25-0 against Horizon Christian, of Fort Wayne, and coasted from there.

The game's first bucket was senior Catherine Weaver's 2001st point of her four-year career. She joins Eagles Andrew Daniels and Colin Featherston in the 2,000-point club, becoming the first Lady Eagle to hit the milestone.

Weaver and Abby Ballinger each finished the game with 12 points.

Game two saw the Lady Eagles get revenge for a three-point loss to Mishawaka last weekend.

"Mishawaka is a well-coached team that has had our number lately. They were state runner-ups last season and it was a big win for us," said Head Coach Mark Schultz. "They are ranked in the top 25 in the nation so it was a big game for our girls. Hopefully it will give us confidence going forward."

The Lady Eagles had three players in double figures, with Weaver and Ballinger at 16 and Erin Sickafoose at 11.

In the final game of the weekend, the Lady Eagles let a 13-point halftime lead get away from them, but outscored the Cougars 17-6 in the final quarter for the win.

Huntington again had three players in double figures, with Weaver scoring 16, Ballinger with 13 and Kelli Neff adding 10.

The Lady Eagles record now stands at 5-2.
