Quartet leads Lady Vike swimmers to rout of Tipp Valley

Cassy Lange, Sam McCann, Katie Schenkel and Emma Helmich helped power the Huntington North High School girls' varsity swim team to a 117-62 rout of host Tippecanoe Valley on Wednesday, Dec. 18.

All four Lady Vikings recorded two first place finishes.

Lange, a senior, was tops in the 50 and 100-yard freestyles, touching the wall in :28.03 and 1:00.96, respectively. McCann, a junior, achieved gold status in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke, completing the former race in 2:22.67 and the latter in 1:21.77.

McCann's fellow junior, Schenkel, captured first in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:32.46 and the 500-yard freestyle in 6:05.48. Helmich, a freshman, rounded out the quartet's individual honors with a pair of 100-yard wins, taking the butterfly in 1:08.30 and the backstroke in 1:11.34.

The foursome did even more winning as a team, combining to win the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay. The group took the medley in 2:09.87.

Silver finishes came from junior Alayna Kiefer in the 200 IM, sophomore Kaitlin Biehl in 500 free and freshman Alexis Miller in the 100 breaststroke. Kiefer and Biehl were also runners-up in the 200-yard freestyle relay, joining with freshmen Alexandra Short and Emma Gordon to finish that race in 2:11.44.

Laura Speziali took third in the 100 breast to give HNHS a top-three sweep in that event.
