Lady Vikes withstand comeback attempt to beat CC

The Huntington North High School girls' varsity basketball team withstood a late comeback attempt from visiting Columbia City for a 49-42 win on Friday, Feb. 7.

The Lady Vikings were up 36-23 on the Lady Eagles in the third quarter for their largest lead of the contest before the visitors narrowed things to 36-27 by the end of the period. Columbia City carried that momentum into final frame, outscoring the hosts 15-13 to make Huntington North sweat out its sixth win of the season against 10 losses.

Senior Paige Coolman and sophomore Hannah Stoffel tossed in 12 points apiece to tie for game-high scoring honors. Senior Alyssa Hiple netted nine points while senior Lindsey Foster added seven points and a game-best five rebounds, helping her team match the Lady Eagles on the boards, 31-31.

Senior Maddie Klender posted game-highs in assists, with five, and steals, with six, as the Lady Vikings tossed in 26 points off turnovers.

The Lady Vikings led 12-10 after the first quarter and 24-19 going into the break, despite only shooting 29.2 percent on 7 of 24 marksmanship. Coach BreAnne Dyer's squad upped its accuracy in the second half, firing at 47.6 percent to finish 17 of 45 from the floor for 37.8 percent.

Aubrey Wright and Macie Hinen paced Columbia City, 12-8, with 11 and 10 points, respectively, as the Lady Eagles hit 18 of 44 from the floor for 40.9 percent.

Huntington North added to its register with a 12 for 21 showing for 57.1 percent from the free throw line.

Columbia City finished 4 for 6 at the stripe for 66.7 percent.

Junior Rachel Anderson knocked down a game-best 11 points to push the Huntington North junior varsity to a 36-33 win. Juniors Morgan Butler and Aly Grabner added eight and seven points, respectively.
