Helmich caps off strong frosh year to lead Lady Vikes at swim sectional

Emma Helmich capped off a strong freshman season with the team's best showings on the day, capturing third in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:04.55 and fourth in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:06.87.

Helmich also teamed with senior Cassy Lange, junior Katie Schenkel and sophomore Maggie Warpup to take third in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 4:00.82.

The quartet participated in the 200-yard medley relay as well, earning fifth in 2:02.33.

Competing in a pair of freestyle races, Lange attained fifth in the 50-yard, touching the wall in :27.71, and sixth in the 100-yard with a clocking of 1:00.80.

Junior Samantha McCann swam to fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:17.14 while sophomore Maggie Warpup finished eighth in the 200 and 500-yard freestyles in 2:13.80 and 6:04.97, respectively, to round out Huntington North's state challengers.

Coach Mycal Rodenbeck's squad tallied 187 points to place seventh at the 13-team sectional. Host Warsaw Community won the meet with a register of 352, followed by Culver Academies' 345, Cass' 256, Logansport's 232, Columbia City's 225, Rochester Community's 214, the Lady Vikes' 187, Manchester's 119, Pioneer's 115, Tippecanoe Valley's 91, Plymouth's 65, Wabash's 25 and Whitko's 22.

Adding to Huntington North's point total in consolation races was freshman Alexis Miller with a ninth in the 100 breaststroke, McCann with 12th in the 200 free and sophomore Kaitlin Biehl with 16th in the 500 free. Those three also joined with freshman Alivia Eiting to achieve ninth in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
