The Huntington University baseball team rallied late, but came up short in a 7-5 loss to Southeastern in the Russ/Matt Tournament in Lakeland, FL, on Wednesday, March 19.
The Foresters spotted the Fire a 7-1 lead after four innings, but scored two runs in the top of the fifth frame and two more in the sixth while holding Southeastern scoreless to tighten things up to 7-5.
Tyler Murphy, however, threw 1.1 scoreless innings for the Fire and quashed Huntington's rally in the top of the seventh, pitching a scoreless frame to pick up the save.
Senior Blake Ayers had a game-high three runs batted in for the Foresters, 4-9, doing so on one hit. Freshman Dalton Combs and Jordan Ham produced an RBI apiece while freshman TJ Landstrand banged out two hits and fellow frosh Michael Kempton scored a pair of runs to post two team-best marks.
Josh Gordon and Stetson McCollin knocked in two RBI each for Southeastern, which finished with seven hits to the Foresters' five.
Andy Roser took the loss for Huntington, surrendering six hits and five runs - two earned - in three innings. Bryce Anderson gave up a hit and two runs in two frames of relief while Tanner Wyse retired all three batters he faced in one inning of work.
Brandon Goff yielded four hits and three earned runs while striking out two in five innings to pick up the win for the Fire.
