Comebacks earn Viking netters first win of season

The Huntington North boys' varsity tennis team earned its first victory of the season with a hard-fought 3-2 decision over Richmond on Saturday, Aug. 23.

Graham Sereno and Auden Eckert, at second and third singles, respectively, both pulled off comebacks for the Vikings. Sereno, a senior, dropped his first set, 2-6, but rebounded in the next two, 6-3, 6-1, to vanquish Jordan Lake. Eckert, a freshman, also lost his opening set by a score of 2-6, but logged consecutive 7-5 decisions to top Logan Mayer.

A 6-0 triumph by senior Cameron Stuttle and sophomore Brent Kreiger at second doubles versus Daniel Jones and Justin Gibbel put the Vikings, 1-3, in the win column.

Losses for Coach Blake Childs' squad came at first singles, where sophomore Nick May was shut out, 0-6, 0-6, by Eric Hollingsworth, and No. 1 doubles as seniors Nathan Lundy and Hunter Phillips fell to Jacob Weiss and Ross Doughty, 2-6, 4-6.

The Vikings were blanked earlier in the day by Muncie Central, 0-5.

May dropped his first singles match to Khamasi Muhiga, 2-6, 1-6, while Sereno came up empty versus Andrew Fox in the No. 2 match, 0-6, 0-6, and Eckert lost to Drake Clohessy in the third, 1-6, 2-6.

Lundy and Phillips were downed by Bobby Cunningham and Clark Tinder at first doubles, 3-6, 2-6, while Stuttle and Kreiger were defeated 3-6, 4-6, by Kaes Petroviak and Nick Schmaltz in the second match.

Huntington North's junior varsity squad topped the Bearcats, 3-0, with doubles wins by sophomore Dane Eherenman and freshman Matt Karst, sophomore Matt York and Karst and sophomores Mo Phillips and Garrett Smith.

The Viking JV, 2-2, ended its day with a 1-2 loss to the Red Devils. Eherenman and Karst, at first doubles, recorded the team's lone win.
