HU netwomen shade Grace

The Huntington University women's tennis team opened its season with a 5-4 win over host Grace College on Wednesday, Aug. 28.

The Foresters got four shutout wins on the day, two in singles and two in doubles. Morgan Bemisderfer at second singles was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Jayna Huber, and Constance Golz blanked Mariah Zumbrun by the same count. The second doubles team of Celine Rongos and Golz won 8-0 over Gabrielle Lawrence and Zumbrun, and Kerrie Ecker and Erin Van Kampen did the whitewash of Sarah Hinkel and Katie Etter.

The remaining HU win came from Rongos at third singles, where she downed Hinkel, 6-1, 6-1.

Cassie Kasicki at first singles was a tie-break loser to Natalia Kurkova, 6-2, 4-6, 7-10. Ecker lost at fifth singles to Lawrence, 1-6, 1-6, and Amanda Brothers lost to Etter by the same score at sixth singles.

Kasicki and Bemisderfer lost at first doubles to Kurkova and Huber, 2-8.
