Murray tallies 3 but HU soccermen lose

Scott Murray tallied three goals but was outdone by sloppy defensive play as the Huntington University men's soccer team fell to visiting Lawrence Tech, 4-3, in double overtime on Monday, Sept. 1.

Murray had given the Foresters, 0-2, a 2-0 lead in the first half, but two HU blunders on defense let Tech knot things at 2-2 heading into intermission. The visitors took a 3-2 lead 20 minutes into the second half before Murray's third score knotted things at 3-3, where the score stayed through the end of regulation and the first overtime before Tech scored in the 102nd minute.

"For as good as Murrray was offensively in finishing for us, we were equally as sloppy defensively as a unit, which ultimately costs us the match," said HU Head Coach Russ Lawson. "It was very disappointing to take a commanding lead and then give it up."

Murrays' first score came on a penalty kick after he was hauled down in the box in the 12th minute of play. Fifteen minutes later he took a Brooks Gerke pass and put the ball behind Tech keeper Josh Lance.

James Couchman took the loss in goal for HU, finishing with six saves.

Justin Ritchie scored twice for Lawrence Tech.
