Frosh gives Forester netwomen edge over Anderson

The Huntington University women's tennis team and visiting Anderson University were deadlocked at 4-4 on Wednesday, Sept. 3, before freshman Erin Van Kampen gave the Foresters a 5-4 win with a third set tiebreak victory.

Van Kampen outlasted Katie Kirkman, 6-4, 6-7, 7-6, in the fifth singles match, helping Huntington even its record at 2-2.

The Foresters swept the top three singles matches, with No. 1 Morgan Bemisderfer downing Sylvia Schering, 6-1, 6-3, No. 2 Celine Rongos dispatching Ashlan Millikan, 6-3, 6-3, and No. 3 Constanze Golz blanking Michaela Hammel, 6-0, 6-0.

Huntington picked up its other win at first doubles, where Bemisderfer and Rongos teamed up to beat Hammel and Millikan, 8-4.

Sophomore Kerrie Ecker lost in three sets to Sarah Starshak at fourth singles, 6-4, 1-6, 4-6, while freshman Amanda Brothers was defeated 0-6, 1-6 by Julia Furness in the sixth singles match.

In doubles play, Ecker and Golz were edged by Michaela Hurd and Schering in the second match, 8-9, and Brothers and Van Kampen fell in the third match to Furness and Starshak, 2-8.
