Beaver stars but HU spikers winless at Big Guns Classic

Freshman Josie Beaver had a big weekend but the Huntington University volleyball team went winless at the St. Franics (IL) Big Guns Classic.

Beaver, a former Huntington North star, knocked down 40 kills and had 25 blocks to earn one of six spots on the all-tournament team.

She went into the weekend ranked fifth in NAIA Division II with 1.32 blocks per game.

The Foresters, 4-14, opened with a 0-3 loss to Roosevelt on Friday, 22-25, 17-25, 15-25. Later that night they pushed Missouri Valley to four sets before falling, 25-18, 25-27, 18-25, 14-25. On Saturday they lose to Graceland in four, 24-26, 11-25, 25-22, 22-25, before finishing with a four-set loss to St. Francis, 17-25, 16-25, 25-21, 18-25.

Beaver had 10 kills in the loss to Roosevelt. Brittany Rooze added nine kills and Danielle Gurwell had eight.

Emily Hubby and Annie Pizzo dished out 15 and 14 assists, respectively, while Katie DePew finished with 16 digs.

Beaver had a career game with 14 kills and 11 blocks against Missouri Valley. Hubby and Pizzo combined for 31 assists while DePew racked up 27 digs.

Rooze was the big stick in the Foresters' loss to Graceland, knocking down 13 kills. Beaver added five kills to go along with seven blocks.

Hubby and Pizzo had 13 and 11 assists, respectively, while DePew got another 27 digs.

Beaver had 11 kills and five blocks in the loss to St. Francis. Audrey Mallers and Heather Medich each had seven kills.

Pizzo and Hubby had 17 and 11 assists, respectively, while DePew had 20 digs and Medich added 11.
