Lady Viking cagers come up short against Muncie Central

The Huntington North girls’ varsity basketball team came up short against host Muncie Central, 61-58, on Friday, Dec. 12.

The Lady Bearcats led the Lady Vikings by nine after the first quarter, 19-10, and allowed them to shave only a point off that deficit by halftime, 33-25. Coach Heidi Lawson’s squad was persistent, however, and cut the hosts’ advantage to six, 49-43, by the end of three. Huntington North kept chipping away at Muncie Central’s advantage in the final frame, but their North Central Conference foes managed to hang on for the three-point win.

Huntington North, 1-7, 0-3 in the NCC, shot accurately in the first half, going 11of 19 for 57.9 percent, but struggled in the second, hitting only 8 of 31 for 25.8 percent. The Lady Vikings’ free-throw shooting kept them in the game, though, as they sank 16 of 20 freebies for 80 percent after the half.

Junior Madi Canady was one of four Lady Vikings to score in double figures, supplying 13 points and a game-best five assists. Senior Aly Graber and junior Hannah Stoffel added 11 points apiece while junior Sarah Fryman paired 10 points with a team-high seven rebounds.

The Lady Bearcats, 5-3, 1-2 in conference, got a dominant game from Jayla Scaife, who notched a double-double with 26 points and 12 rebounds, both game-highs. Behind Scaife’s night on the boards, the hosts topped Huntington North in rebounding, 37-29.

Ka’Chell Tate netted 13 points for Muncie Central and Fa’Tara Davis tallied 11 to help the Lady Bearcats finish 27 of 53 from the field for 50.9 percent.

At the stripe, Muncie Central went 3 for 11 for 27.3 percent.
