Big fourth quarter by Columbia City sinks HNHS girls' basketball team

Turnovers and a big fourth quarter by host Columbia City cost the Huntington North High School girls’ basketball team in its final regular season game of the year as it lost 42-32.

The two teams accounted for 40 turnovers in the contest – 21 by HNHS – but the Lady Vikes held a 24-22 lead heading into the final stanza, only to see the hosts outscore them 20-8 to earn the win.

Taylor Foley led HNHS, 9-11, with 11 points. Liesl Davenport added seven.

The Lady Vikes shot only 23.9 percent from the field, connecting on 11 of 46 field goal attempts. Columbia City wasn’t much better at 12 of 36, 33.3 percent, but the hosts went to the free throw line 25 times and made 18, as opposed to HNHS only shooting 13 free throws, hitting nine.

Tajsha Shock led HNHS on the boards with six rebounds. Kayla Schenkel was tops in assists with two. Davenport added six steals and Foley had five.

Columbia City was led by Sara Woll with 12 points.

The HNHS JV also got beat, 49-40.

Courtney Carpenter led the Lady Vikes JV with 15 points. Esta Stoffel had six rebounds.

The Lady Vikes next play in the Fort Wayne North Side sectional, on Friday, Feb. 13, at 7:30 p.m.
