Second half shooting woes did in the Huntington North boys’ varsity basketball team against visiting Lafayette Jefferson, 53-46, on Friday, Jan. 23.

The Vikings, after shooting 10 of 18 in the first half for 55.6 percent, managed only nine field goals on 28 attempts in the second for 32.1 percent. Trailing at halftime, 28-23, their hole got deeper when the Bronchos opened the third quarter with a 10-0 run to craft their biggest lead of the game, 38-23. Coach Rob Irwin’s squad trimmed the deficit to 42-31 by the start of the final frame, but just couldn’t get enough shots to fall to close the gap.

Huntington North, 5-8, 0-4 in the North Central Conference, got 14 points from Cody Adams. The senior also collected a game-high eight rebounds, helping the Vikings finish with 24 boards, three shy of the Bronchos’ mark.

Sophomore Hunter Hollowell added 13 points to the hosts’ cause and junior Konner Platt contributed 12.

The Vikings finished 19 of 46 from the floor for 41.3 percent and 4 of 5 at the foul line for 80 percent.

On the other side of the court, Jefferson converted 21 of 39 field goals for 53.8 percent and 7 of 13 freebies for 53.8 percent.

Darian Collins netted 22 points for the Bronchos, 7-7, 3-2 in the NCC. David Hanyard netted 12.

Jefferson led 16-11 after the first quarter before matching Huntington North’s 12 points in the second to preserve its five-point cushion going into intermission.

The Vikings lost the junior varsity contest, 50-48.

Sophomore Luke Pulver tallied 13 points for Huntington North while freshman Ethan Shafer supplied nine points and eight rebounds.
