Season ends at sectional finals for HNHS swimboys

The season came to an end for the Huntington North boys’ swim team on Saturday, Feb. 21, as its qualifiers for the Warsaw Sectional finals failed to win their events or meet state standard times.

Despite not sending any swimmers to the state finals, the Vikings captured fourth as a squad in the 12-team field with a tally of 223 points.

The 200-yard medley relay team, featuring seniors Walter Hacker and Josh Young, junior Zane Cozad and sophomore Cody Barton, produced Huntington North’s best finish of the day. The foursome placed third with a clocking of 1:49.84.

Cozad and Barton each finished fourth in individual events. Cozad swam the 200-yard individual medley in 2:14.11 while Barton raced to a time of 1:06.59 in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Hacker touched the wall in :58.06 in the 100-yard butterfly, good for fifth, three spots ahead of Barton, who stopped the timer in 1:00.28.

Cozad attained sixth in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 5:16.87, while Hacker took seventh in the 200-yard freestyle, clocking in at 1:59.52.

Hacker, Young, Cozad and Barton also competed in the 400-yard freestyle relay, seizing fifth in 3:39.59.

The Vikings’ other relay team, the 200-yard freestyle quartet of seniors Austin Lange and Nathan Lundy, junior Gunnar Wibel and sophomore Jacob Koons, claimed seventh in 1:42.59.

Lundy and Young rounded out Huntington North’s finals competitors with eighth-place showings. Young swam the 50-yard freestyle in :24.58 while Lundy completed the 100-yard backstroke in 1:06.36.

Warsaw won the sectional title with 525 points. Culver Academies earned runner-up honors with a register of 372, followed by Rochester Community with 259.

Several swimmers contributed points to Huntington North’s cause in the consolation finals. Lange logged 12th and 13th-place finishes in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 IM, respectively. Koons also tallied points in a pair of events, taking 13th in the 200 freestyle and 14th in the 500 freestyle.

Wibel was 10th in the 100 backstroke, two spots ahead of Nathan Park. Lundy took 12th in the 100 butterfly while Young swam to 13th in the 100-yard freestyle, completing the Vikings’ tally.

Columbia City finished after Huntington North, securing fifth with 211 points, followed by Cass, sixth, 148; Logansport, seventh, 102; Wabash, eighth, 89; Manchester, ninth, 82; Tippecanoe Valley, 10th, 76; Pioneer, 11th, 74; and Plymouth, 12th, 55.
