HNHS girl swimmers sweep firsts, rout Tipp Valley

Led by senior Mariah Patrick and sophomores Cassie Hacker and Sara Karst, the Huntington North High School girls' swim team won every event and routed host Tippecanoe Valley 137-39 on Wednesday, Dec. 16.

The HNHS girls swept the top three spots in five events as well.

Patrick took the 100-yard freestyle in 1:01.45, and the 100-yard backstroke in 1:06.24. Hacker placed first in the 50-yard freestyle in 28.06, and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:16.70. Karst took the gold in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:18.37, and the 500-yard freestyle in 6:02.59.

In addition, Hacker and Patrick combined with sophomore Emily Koons and senior Madi Wright to win the 200-yard medley relay in 2:13.46. Hacker, Wright, Karst and junior Taylor Feller took the 200-yard freestyle relay in 2:00.05. Huntington North completed its sweep of the relays with Wright, Karst, Patrick and freshman Ava Schulte taking the 400-yard freestyle relay in 4:24.90.

In other individual events, senior Linda Schmidt won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:46.72. Sophomore Rosemary Kaiser took diving with 117.75 points, and Koons won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:21.12.

HNHS swept the top three in the 200 IM, the 100 fly, the 500 free, the 100 breast and the 200 free relay.

In the 200 IM, Koons and Kayla Green took second and third, respectively, for HNHS, and Green and Katlyn Stebing got second and third, respectively in the 100 fly. Schulte took second and Maddie Meese third in the 500 free, and backing up Hacker in the 100 breast were Marissa Bannister and Becca Stong, respectively.
