HNHS boy swimmers sweep all firsts, rout Tipp Valley

Sweeping first in all 12 events, the Huntington North High School boys' swim team dominated host Tippecanoe Valley 108-48 on Wednesday, Dec. 16.

The Vikings were led by senior standouts Shaun Marion, Chris Royer and Danny Scher, who each won two individual events and were members of two first-place relay teams.
Marion captured the 200-yard freestyle in 1:59.69, and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:10.38. Royer won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:26.97, and the 100-yard butterfly in 1:02.89. Scher tied things up by taking the 50-yard freestyle in 22.95, and the 100-yard freestyle in 53.46.

Marion, Scher and Royer teamed up with junior Phillip Zook to win the 200-yard medley relay in 1:56.98 - over 30 seconds ahead of Tippecanoe Valley. In Huntington North's win of the 200-yard freestyle relay, Marion, Scher, Royer and senior Casey Dubuc took the gold in the event, with a time of 1:38.50. Wrapping up the Vikings' relay wins was Zook, Dubuc, sophomore Ethan Hethcote and junior Taylor Mortorff in the 400-yard freestyle relay, which they took in 3:59.87.

In other individual events, Dubuc took diving with a score of 230.55, Mortorff won the 500-yard freestyle in 6:18.24 and Zook took gold in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:05.14.

The small HNHS team went 1-2 in six of its wins, including the 200 medley relay, the 200 IM, the 50 free, 100 fly, 100 back and 100 breast.

Zook placed second to Royer in the 200 IM, Dubuc was runner-up to Scher in the 50 free and Hethcote was second in the 100 fly and 100 back. Mortorff was runner-up in the 100 breast.
