The Huntington University women’s basketball team fell to visiting Grace College, 61-55, on Wednesday, Feb. 3.

The Lancers, sitting at last place in the Crossroads League, didn’t play like bottom feeders, jumping out to a 23-15 lead on the Foresters by the end of the first quarter. Coach Lori Culler’s squad displayed resiliency, though, battling back to tie the game at 31 with 1:59 remaining until halftime. Still, Grace ended up going into the locker room with a four-point advantage, 36-32, which it then bumped out to as many as 13 points in the third quarter before settling for a nine-point cushion, 47-38, heading into the fourth. Huntington got within four points of Grace on multiple occasions in the final frame, but failed to get any closer than that as the hosts sank free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

The Foresters, 15-10, 5-8 in league play, got a game-high 19 points from junior Miranda Palmer. Senior Kelsey Hubble tallied 13 points while senior Amelia Recker and junior Allyson Trout both netted eight.

Recker and senior Jaclene Bonnema were active on the glass, grabbing seven and six rebounds, respectively, but Huntington lost the battle of the boards, 38-30.

The Foresters shot 38.3 percent from the field on 23 of 60 marksmanship and 44.4 percent at the free-throw line on 4 of 9 shooting.

Gabby Miller tallied 16 points to lead Grace, 6-19, 1-12 in conference. Kelsie Peterson contributed 14 points to the Lancer cause while Sarah Feasby supplied 11. In addition to scoring eight points, Haley Richardson collected as many rebounds.

The Lancers went 23 of 49 from the field for 46.9 percent and 12 of 17 at the charity stripe for 70.6 percent.
