Vikings top visiting Bulldogs, 56-38

The Huntington North High School boys’ varsity basketball team topped visiting New Haven, 56-38, on Saturday, Feb. 6.

Although the conference rivals were deadlocked at 12 after the first quarter, the Vikings doubled the Bulldogs’ offensive production in the second to surge ahead, 32-22. Coach Craig Teagle’s squad then tossed in 12 points to the visitors’ eight in each of the following two frames to put the game out of reach. The hosts enjoyed a 44-30 advantage at the end of three quarters before expanding their lead to its widest margin of the game by the final buzzer.

Junior Hunter Hollowell scored a game-high 19 points for Huntington North, 13-7, 4-2 in the Northeast 8 Conference. Senior Konner Platt posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds while junior Chazz Bruce tallied 14 points and junior Sam Daugherty logged eight for the Vikings.

Behind Platt’s big afternoon on the glass, Huntington North won the battle of the boards, 31-20.

The Vikings shot 52.6 percent from the field on 20 of 38 marksmanship and 83.3 percent at the free-throw line on 10 of 12 shooting.

New Haven, 12-7, 4-2 in conference, got 13 points from Diamond Towns. Joey Rowan supplied 11 points to the visitors’ offensive effort while Marqis Stevenson chipped in 10.

The Bulldogs converted 13 of 44 field goal attempts for 29.5 percent and 9 of 11 freebie tries for 81.8 percent.

Huntington North came up short in the junior varsity tilt, 43-41.

Sophomore Joe Stoffel and freshman Zach Daugherty paced the Vikings, 11-5, with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
