Koch win helps Lady Vikes to fifth at Lime City Relays

Sophomore Karmen Koch won one event and scored in two more individually as the Huntington North High school girls' track team placed fifth out of seven teams at the Lime City Relays on Saturday, April 30.

Koch's triumph in the 300-meter hurdles was the lone win of the day for the Lady Vikings, who tallied  68 points at the meet, well behind champion Homestead's score of 112.

Koch sped to her win in :47.98 to beat runner-up Kyara Muhammad of Fort Wayne Northrop by more than a second.

She added fourth place points in the high jump with a leap of 5-foot and garnered fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of :17.39.

Senior Hannah Stoffel and two relay teams also got podium finishes for the hosts. Stoffel placed second in the 1,600-meter run in 5:09.2, and both the 800-meter sprint medley and 3,200-meter relay teams placed third. The shorter relay team clocked in at 2:05.20 and was made up of Josie Graft, Jordyn Poulson, Emily Bucher and Amara Eckert, and the 3,200 team came home in 10:21.29 and was made up of Brooke Goodrich, Koch, Marissa Jamison and Stoffel.

Huntington North got fourth place points from its 400-meter relay team of Bucher, Eckert, Graft and Poulson, which came home in :55.51.

Jamsion backed up Stoffel in the 1,600 with fifth place, coming home in 5:30.18, and the distance medley relay team of Eckert, Cadee Harmon, Jenna Henline and Alena Miller also placed fifth, in 7:47.50.

Kyler Hoopingarner in the 3,200-meter run and Amaya Sunderman in the shot put grabbed sixth place finishes. Hoopingarner crossed the finish line in 12:44.47 for hers, and Sunderman heaved the metal ball 32-00 for her finish.

Tabi Smith placed seventh in the discus with a throw of 85-01, Bucher was seventh in the long jump at 15-00 and Goodrich took eighth in the high jump at 4-8.

Northrop placed second with 106 points and Merrillville was third with 92.5.
