Ariel Sheets tossed a two-hit shutout to lead the Huntington University softball team over Mount Vernon Nazarene University, 4-0, in the first round of the Crossroads League tournament, held at Taylor University on Thursday, May 6.

Sheets, a senior, yielded just a walk and recorded a strikeout in seven innings to collect the win, her 14th against seven losses.

With the victory, second-seeded Huntington, 34-15, 26-10 in league play, advanced to play sixth-seeded Taylor later on that day.

Senior Emily O’Leary backed up Sheets’ pitching with a hit and two runs batted in. The Forester offense, which totaled seven hits, also got an RBI apiece from junior Natalie McGuire and freshman Marty Harris.

Coach Doug Gower’s squad wasted no time taking a lead, scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning. Huntington then cushioned its advantage with solo tallies in third and sixth frames.

Lauren Arndt surrendered four runs, two of which were earned, in six innings to take the loss for seventh-seeded Mount Vernon, 22-28, 15-19. Arndt’s defense committed three miscues.
