4 Lady Vikes to bowling semi-state; team wins regional title

Earning their way to the bowling semi-state single compeltition next week, by virtue of their efforts at regional on Saturday, Feb. 6, are Lady Vikings (form left) Tonya Crago; the individual champion; and Audrey Hiner, Lesley Love and Ayla Yeiter. Photo provided.

Tonya Crago bowled a 600 series to take the individual regional champion title and she also helped lead the Huntington North High School girls' bowling team to the team regional title on Saturday, Feb. 6.

Crago went 214, 174 and 212 for her three games, nine higher than the runner-up, fellow Lady Viking Lesley Love. Due to a delay in starting time because of weather, individual finishes were determined by total pins instead of a stepladder final.

Love rolled games of 171, 206 and 214 to also advance to semi-state. Audrey Hiner bowled 201, 178 and 189 for a total of 559, and Ayla Yeiter scored 554 by rolling 197, 200 and 157. All bowlers above 535 after three games advanced to the semi-state competition.

Like the individual competition, the team regional was determined by total points instead of a bracket-type final. In addition, the Indiana High School Bowling Association mandated a sport-type oil pattern on the lanes to increase difficulty level.

The Lady Vikings scored 956 to start the tournament, with Yeiter taking 204, Love with 203, Crago with 185, Elizabeth Bischoff with 184 and Brittany Notestine with 180.

The second match saw Huntington North hit 966 to make the total 1900 for the two matches. Bischoff led with way with 211. Yeiter was right behind with 210, Crago had 185 and Notestine took 180. Love and Hiner split the round and totaled 158 between the two.

In the Baker-style round, Huntington North rolled games of 163, 138, 158, 208 and 226 to total 2792, 248 pins in front of Decatur Central, the runner-up. Muncie Southside took third place.

The team semi-state competition will be Saturday, Feb. 13, at 9 a.m. at Richmond 40 Lanes in Richmond. Singles competition will begin at 2 p.m.
