Lady Viking bowlers to state

The third third-ranked Huntington North High School girls bowling team continued its drive toward a third state title by placing second at semi-state in South Bend on Saturday, Feb. 14.

The Lady Vikings, seeking their first state title since 2002, trailed DeKalb for the fourth and final state-qualifying spot in the semi-state by just eight pins after four of the five Baker games. In the final Baker contest, however, the Lady Vikes rolled 187 to DeKalb's 158 to earn their spot in the semi-state finals, and a trip to state this weekend.

Once in the semi-state finals, Huntington North defeated Griffith, 310-272, and Lake Central, 323-378, before falling to sixth-ranked Snider, 475-396.

The four qualifiers from South Bend will join fifth-ranked Muncie Southside, Lafayette Jefferson, Anderson and Center Grove at state.

The Lady Vikings got to Baker play by rolling games of 962 and 947 in qualifying. Brittany Notestine came up big with a 234 in the first game, followed by Elizabeth Bishoff with a 200, Ayla Yeiter 186, Morgan Dafforn 184 and Tonya Crago 158. Bischoff had the lead with a 211 in the second contest, followed by Crago with a 205, Yeiter 200, Notestine 181 and Dafforn with a 150.

Bischoff, the only Lady Viking competing in semi-state singles, rolled a three-game series of 501 to finish 29th, and did not qualify for state.

The Lady Vikings will begin their title quest Saturday, Feb. 21, at 9 a.m. at Cooper's Sport Bowl, in Anderson.
