The storybook ending didn't quite happen for the Huntington North High School girls' basketball team as it lost to Fort Wayne South Side, 69-55, in the Jay County sectional championship game on Monday, Feb. 15.

After upsetting 19-2 Homestead in the first game, HNHS cut a 12-point deficit down to six with about three minutes left in the contest, but the Lady Archers held firm and pushed the lead back up to 16 points before the clock ran out.

The Lady Vikings, finishing their campaign at 5-17, kept within striking distance of South Side, 15-8, for most of the night although they couldn't get the lead after the first few minutes of the contest.

South held a 17-13 lead after the first quarter and went into halftime with a 30-23 advantage. The Lady Archers were on top by the same margin after three quarters with a 44-37 lead.

Liesl Davenport closed out her HNHS career in style, hitting a season-best 9 of 12 shots from the field on the way to a game-high 23 points. Fellow senior Taylor Foley finished with 15 points, 14 rebounds, three assists, two steals and a blocked shot.

Kaytlyn Kreider aided the HNHS cause with seven points, and Tajsha Shrock chipped in with eight rebounds.

Jamesha Ridley led South Side with 14 points. Ariana Simmons had 12 points and Brittany Johnson notched 11.

Continuing to shoot good for the second straight game, the Lady Vikings hit 17 of 37 field goal attempts for 45.9 percent. They only tried six 3-pointers, but did not connect on any.

South Side hit a solid 28 of 56 attempts from the field for 50 percent.

South Side will play the winner of the Pendleton Heights match-up at Huntington North Saturday, Feb. 20, at noon.
