Viking boy swimmers grab six firsts in sectional prelims; look for ticket to state on Saturday

The Huntington North High School boys' swim team grabbed first place in six events and took second in two other events, all while breaking two school records at the Warsaw swimming sectional preliminaries on Thursday, Feb. 18.

The Viking squad took the 200-yard medley relay in 1:43.88 - a school record, and Skyler Ruschhaupt broke another HNHS record by winning the 100-yard butterfly in :52.37.

The top 12 swimmers in each event advance to the finals on Saturday, Feb. 20. The top six places will compete in the final round, with places seven through 12 landing spots in the consolation finals.

Moving on for Huntington North in addition to the 200-yard medley relay team and Ruschhaupt in the 100-yard butterfly are the following:

- The Viking 200-yard freestyle relay team, which won the event in 1:30.69.

- Ruschhaupt, who also landed gold in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:01.94.

- Dan Scher, grabbing first in the 50-yard freestyle in :21.98, and first in the 100-yard freestyle in 48.74.

- Shaun Marion, placing second in the 100-yard backstroke and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle.

- Casey Dubuc, who finished seventh in 50-yard freestyle.

- Chris Royer, who placed seventh in the 100-yard butterfly, and eighth in the 200-yard individual medley.

- Ethan Hethcote, who took 10th in the 100-yard butterfly and eighth in the 100-yard backstroke.

- Phillip Zook, who placed ninth in the 200-yard individual medley and 12th in the 500-yard freestyle.

- Huntington North's 400-yard freestyle relay squad, which took seventh place.

After the consolation finals, the top six contestants will move on to the final round. To get to the state competition in Indianapolis on Feb. 26-27, swimmers must meet either the state-specified qualifying time, or must win first in their respective events.
