Vikings withstand late run by Southwood

The Huntington North High School boys’ varsity basketball team withstood a late run by host Southwood to post a 62-58 win on Friday, Dec. 2.

The Vikings entered the fourth quarter with a 50-39 lead, but the Knights chipped away at that advantage with a 19-point outburst that deflated Huntington North’s cushion to single digits. The effort was too little, too late, however, as the Vikings held on for the win, their second in three games this season.

Hunter Hollowell led Huntington North with 29 points. The senior went 8 of 11 from the field and 10 of 11 at the free-throw line. He also collected a game-high eight rebounds to give the Vikings a 29-16 advantage on the backboards.

Senior Sam Daugherty and sophomore Zach Daugherty backed up Hollowell’s offensive effort with eight points apiece.

The Vikings converted 20 of 39 field goal attempts for 51.3 percent and 17 of 21 free throw tries for 81 percent.

Southwood, 1-1, got a game-best 35 points from Carson Blair. The junior sank 8 of 12 shots from beyond the arc and downed 9 of 10 free throws. Matt Nose added 15 points to the hosts’ cause.

The Knights went 15 for 37 from the field for 40.5 percent and 18 for 23 at the charity stripe for 78.3 percent.

Huntington North also won the junior varsity contest, 54-37.

The Vikings, 3-0, were led by sophomores Sawyer Stoltz and Hank Pulver, who tallied 24 and 18 points, respectively.
