Lady Vikes outlast Leo

The Huntington North High School girls’ varsity basketball team outlasted host Leo, 51-46, on Thursday, Jan. 12.

The Lady Vikings took a 12-8 lead in the first quarter, but the Lady Lions prevented them from expanding it any further by halftime, keeping the deficit to just four points, 27-23. Leo shortened the gap to three, 39-36, by the end of the third, but Huntington North finished strong, taking an eight-point lead – its biggest of the contest – with just 25 seconds left in the final frame to secure the win.

Three players scored in double figures for the Lady Vikings, 10-6, 4-0 in the Northeast 8 Conference. Junior Rileigh Johnson led the way with 12 points, followed by senior Kylie Kaylor, with 11, and junior Hollyn Anderson, with 10.

Johnson and Kaylor were also active on the glass, collecting eight and seven rebounds, respectively, to give Huntington North a 33-25 edge in that department.

Junior Karmen Koch and sophomore Madalyn Robrock chipped in eight points apiece to the Lady Vikings’ offensive effort, which saw the visitors convert 19 of 49 field goal attempts for 38.8 percent and 8 of 9 free throw opportunities for 88.9 percent.

Sophia Pierce tallied a game-high 16 points to pace Leo, 10-6, 2-2 in NE8 action. Cate Steward notched a double-double, pairing 10 points with 11 boards.

The Lady Lions shot 19 of 43 from the field for 44.2 percent and 6 of 13 at the charity stripe for 46.2 percent.

Huntington North was also victorious in the junior varsity matchup, 35-20.

Rylee Williams and Ashlynn Foster led the Lady Vikings, 11-5, with 10 points apiece.

In the freshmen contest, Huntington North came up short, 19-18.

Macy Campbell tossed in six points for the Lady Vikes.
