Frosh doesn't play like rookie in college debut as HU softball squad wins

Freshman Camille Furrow played nothing like a rookie in her collegiate debut to help lead the Huntington University softball team to a 3-2 extra-innings win over host Manchester on Tuesday, Feb. 21, in the Foresters' season-opener.

The Foresters and Spartans played to a 1-1 tie in the second game that ended due to darkness.

Furrow threw scoreless ball for five innings, gave up two runs in the sixth inning and then held on for two more scoreless frames to get the win.

Marty Harris made the win happen with an infield single that drove in Audra Klopenstein in the top of the eighth inning. The run batted in was Harris' second of the day and came after Klopfenstein, who started on second base as international tie-breaker rules were used, took third on a wild pitch before Harris' hit.

Furrow relied on the fielding of Natalie McGuire for three defensive plays in the bottom of the eighth to get the win.

Harris' other hit was a run-scoring double in the sixth. She came around to score on a single by Sabrina Bethel.

Furrow gave up eight hits and struck out four without walking a batter in her debut.

Furrow picked up her first collegiate RBI when she knocked in Klopfenstein with a hit in the fourth inning of the nightcap.

Freshman Lairen Miller pitched five innings and gave up six hits and the one run for HU, with one strikeout and no walks.
