Lady Viking gymnasts fifth at sectional

The season concluded for the Huntington North High School gymnastics team at the Concordia Lutheran Sectional on Saturday, Feb. 25.

The Lady Vikings captured fifth place at the 14-team meet, which was two spots shy of qualifying for the Huntington North Regional. The top three teams advanced to the regional, which is set for Saturday, March 4, along with the top six finishers in each event and the all-around.

Danielle Korporal came the closest to moving on for Huntington North with her showing on the balance beam. The junior tied for eighth with a score of 8.900, just shy of the 9.000 posted by the sixth-place finishers.

Junior Brianna Bates took 11th on the beam with an 8.800. Senior Samantha Doll claimed 21st with an 8.375 while junior Sarah Malone attained 26th with an 8.200.

Bates led the Lady Vikings in the floor exercise, tallying a 9.200 to tie for 11th. Freshman Aleah Eckert scored a 9.000 to tie for 16th with two other competitors. Freshman Bailey Harris secured 19th with an 8.900 while Doll notched 21st with an 8.800.

Bates earned a share of 11th place with two other gymnasts on the uneven bars, totaling an 8.450. Korporal placed 25th with a 7.350 while Malone and Doll tied each other for 27th with tallies of 7.150.

The vault saw Bates, Doll and a pair of other competitors tie for 19th with scores of 8.850. Harris logged an 8.700 to claim 25th and Eckert posted an 8.550 to tie for 27th with two other gymnasts.

In the all-around competition, Bates earned 10th with a final register of 35.300. Doll secured 17th with a 33.175.

Bishop Dwenger won the sectional title with a score of 112.150. The Lady Saints were led by all-around champion Sophia Wrightturflinger, who tallied a 37.475.

Carroll was the runner-up with a 110.275, followed by Homestead in the third and final advancing slot with a 108.325.

Concordia Lutheran placed fourth with a 106.750, followed by Huntington North, 102.525; Northrop, 102.300; Snider, 95.825; Wayne, 93.425; Jay County, 92.375; Marion, 73.675; Bishop Luers, 64.900; South Side, 45.150; North Side, 25.350; and Bellmont, 17.350.
