Reese, Whitney set new marks at Discover Roanoke 5K

Tyler Reese and Hanna Whitney were the top male and female finishers, respectively, of the 5K portion of the Discover Roanoke 10K/5K/1 Mile Race, held Saturday, April 15, in downtown Roanoke.

Reese and Whitney both set course records en route to their victories. Reese, a 28-year-old from Paulding, OH, crossed the finish line in 18:32.7. Whitney, a 14-year-old from Roanoke, stepped over the end stripe in 21:31.6.

In the 10K portion of the race, Brad Prather was the male winner while Samantha Chapman was the female victor. Prather, a 45-year-old from Roanoke, clocked in at 34:55.4, while Chapman, a 26-year-old from Indianapolis, stopped the timer in 46:02.7.

The race’s one-mile competition saw Grace Lane finish first among female competitors in a record-setting time. The 12-year-old from Churubusco came home in 7:48.7.

Sam Double, a 10-year-old from Roanoke, was the one-mile competition’s top male runner, finishing in 8:10.9.

Proceeds from the race benefitted the Roanoke Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization.
