A win at first doubles was all the Huntington North High School girls’ tennis team could manage against Norwell in a 1-4, season-ending loss in the semifinals of the Norwell Sectional on Thursday, May 18.

The duo of junior Kassidy Thompson and sophomore Macy Wohlford posted the Lady Vikings’ lone victory, outlasting Madison Oakes and Caitlynn Griggs in three sets, 7-5, 5-7, 7-5. With the triumph, Thompson and Wohlford keep their season going and will compete in the state’s tournament for individuals from eliminated teams this week.

For Huntington North, ending the season at 7-11, the outcome is identical to its regular-season matchup with Norwell, which also resulted in a 1-4 loss, highlighted by a win at first doubles.

Junior Tarah Zumbrun, at third singles, was the strongest in defeat for the Lady Vikes, taking Cierra Middleton three sets before succumbing, 4-6, 6-4, 4-6.

The first and second solo matches saw Jessica Henline and Katie Hunt both fall in straight sets. Henline, a sophomore, lost the first match, 2-6, 2-6, to Breann Barger, while Hunt, a senior, dropped the second contest to Molly Burton, 1-6, 0-6.

A 2-6, 3-6 defeat by senior Alyssa Hewson and junior Anna Schroeder at second doubles to Sadie Mann and Abby Hoover rounded out Huntington North’s day.
