Lady Vikes 9th in elite race at Marion Invite

Behind a top-25 finish by Alena Miller, the Huntington North High School girls’ varsity cross country team claimed ninth place in the elite race at the Marion Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 2, at Indiana Wesleyan University.

Miller captured 23rd place among team runners for the Lady Vikings. The junior clocked in at 19:19.3.

Freshman Hanna Whitney finished second for Huntington North, taking 40th in 19:49.5. Senior Chloe Scheiber crossed the finish line 10 seconds after her, stopping the timer at 19:59.3, which was good for 45th. Junior Kyler Hoopingarner placed 68th, stepping over the end stripe in 20:41. Senior Hollyn Anderson rounded out the team’s scoring five, earning 80th in 21:14.3.

Senior Emma Melcher attained 88th in 21:21.7 while sophomore Kendyl Coles notched 93rd in 21:39.5 to complete the Lady Vikes’ top seven.

Also competing for Huntington North was freshman Lesley Zook, 21:43.1; senior Charlotte Borland, 22:42.4; and freshman Naomi Richison, 22:47.9.

Carroll won the race in dominant fashion, compiling a score of 43. Noblesville was second with a register of 92, followed by Carmel, 97; Penn, 143; Chesterton, 170; Bishop Dwenger, 176; Homestead, 182; Oak Hill, 189; and Huntington North, 256;

Also, Warsaw, 269; DeKalb, 281; North Central, 340; Columbia City, 363; Pendleton Heights, 378; Northrop, 430; Bellmont, 476; and Heritage, 541.

In the junior varsity race, the Lady Vikings placed 13th out of 18 teams with a register of 410.

Junior Shelby Smith paced Huntington North, earning 60th among team runners in 23:50.7. Junior Lisa Nalliah took 64th in 24:02.3, followed by senior Rachel Moore, 94th, 26:19.8; Theresa Oelinger, 95th, 26:21.2; and senior Mary Surfus, 97th, 26:42.2.

Also competing for the Lady Vikes was senior Haley Burnau, 99th in 26:50.1, and senior Jennifer Leonard, 107th in 27:39.2.
