Singles wins help HU netmen edge Judson

Four wins in singles play pushed the Huntington University men’s tennis team past visiting Judson University, 5-4, on Friday, Sept. 8.

The key victory for the Foresters, 3-2, was at sixth singles, where Brody Worl upended Joshua Gronowski, 3-6, 6-3 (10-5). The team’s other solo victories came in straight sets. Ignacio Poncio defeated John Mittvick at first singles, 6-3, 6-3. Rodrigo Manzo was a 6-0, 6-3 winner over Elish Hougland at second singles. Giovanni Martinez rounded out the wins with a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Michael Bruen in the No. 3 match.

Huntington’s other victory on the day came courtesy of Luke Buttermore and Jacob Shelton at third doubles, where they defeated Bruen and Gronowski, 8-3.

Poncio and Mariano Echevarria got edged at first doubles, 6-8, by Mittvick and Hougland. Manzo and Martinez suffered a 3-8 setback to Riley Rowan and Christopher Veltkamp at second doubles.

In singles play, Echevarria fell to Veltkamp in the fourth match, 3-6, 3-6, while Shelton got downed by Rowan in the fifth tilt, 2-6, 0-6.
